That is close to useless, because an A5 Brakes candidate and an L1 Advanced Engine Performance candidate are sitting exams that share almost no content, run to different lengths, cost twice as much apart, and demand a different number of years on the shop floor before ASE will issue the credential at all. The short answer
There is no single ASE test. ASE runs 59 certification tests across ten series, and the one you book decides everything else. The Automobile tests run 50 to 60 questions in 60 to 90 minutes, and every ASE certification test carries exactly 10 unscored research questions on top of the scored count, so the A1 Engine Repair test is 55 questions of which 45 count toward your score. ASE does not publish a passing score or a pass rate for its professional certification tests. Certification also requires documented work experience, and the requirement is not the flat two years most prep sites quote: it is 1 year for the G1, 3 years for the L-Series, and 2 years for every other test, with up to half of it satisfied by appropriate vocational training.

Question 1 · A5 Brakes: diagnosis
A vehicle has a pulsating brake pedal that appears only during braking from highway speed. Technician A says excessive lateral runout in the rotor can produce this complaint over time. Technician B says a seized caliper slide pin is the most likely cause. Who is right?

Judge each statement on its own, which is the method ASE itself recommends. Technician A is correct: excessive lateral runout lets the pads scrub the high spots of a spinning rotor, which over thousands of miles produces disc thickness variation, and it is that thickness variation you feel as pedal pulsation. Technician B is wrong, not because a seized slide pin is harmless but because it produces different symptoms: uneven inboard-to-outboard pad wear, a pull to one side, and dragging or overheating. It does not make the pedal pulse. The trap here is treating the two statements as a debate about brakes in general instead of scoring each one separately.
Question 2 · A1 Engine Repair: cylinder leakage testing
During a cylinder leakage test with the piston at top dead center on the compression stroke, air is heard escaping from the tailpipe. This indicates:
- A. worn piston rings
- B. a leaking intake valve
- C. a leaking exhaust valve
- D. a failed head gasket

A leakage test is useful precisely because where the air comes out tells you what is leaking. Air at the tailpipe has traveled out through the exhaust valve and down the exhaust system, so the exhaust valve is not sealing. Air heard at the throttle body or intake means the intake valve is leaking. Air at the oil fill or dipstick tube means it is passing the rings into the crankcase. Bubbles in the coolant, or a rising coolant level, point to the head gasket or a crack. Learn the four escape paths as a set and this whole family of questions becomes one piece of knowledge rather than four.
Question 3 · A6 Electrical: voltage drop testing
A voltage drop test taken across the ground side of the starter circuit reads 0.8 volts while the engine is cranking. This reading indicates:
- A. a normal ground circuit under load
- B. excessive resistance somewhere in the ground path
- C. a shorted starter solenoid
- D. an overcharged battery

Voltage drop measures voltage that a circuit consumed getting from one point to another, and on a cable or connection that should be near zero. Any meaningful drop on the ground side is voltage being burned in resistance rather than delivered to the starter, and 0.8 volts on a ground path is well past acceptable. The reason this test beats an ohmmeter is that it is done with the circuit loaded and current flowing, which is the only condition where a corroded strap or a loose connection reveals itself. A resistance check on the same cable with the circuit off can read fine.
Question 4 · A4 Suspension and Steering: tire wear diagnosis
A tire shows a feathered, saw-tooth wear pattern across the face of the tread that can be felt when a hand is run sideways across it. The most likely cause is:
- A. incorrect toe setting
- B. excessive positive camber
- C. chronic underinflation
- D. a bent wheel

Feathering is the signature of a tire being dragged sideways as it rolls forward, which is exactly what a toe error does. The tread blocks wear on a slant, so the surface feels smooth in one direction and sharp in the other. The other patterns are just as diagnostic once you separate them: camber error wears one shoulder only, underinflation wears both shoulders while leaving the center, and overinflation does the reverse and wears the center. A bent wheel produces vibration and possibly cupping, not a directional feathered edge.
Question 5 · A7 Heating and Air Conditioning: no compressor engagement
An air conditioning compressor clutch will not engage. Technician A says a low refrigerant charge can open the low-pressure cutout switch and prevent engagement. Technician B says an open fuse in the clutch circuit would produce the same complaint. Who is right?

Both statements are true independently, which is what the Both A and B option is for. The low-pressure cutout exists to protect the compressor from running without enough refrigerant to carry oil around the system, so a low charge opens it and the clutch never energizes. That is protective behavior working as designed, not a fault in itself. An open fuse or any other break in the clutch feed circuit removes power from the clutch coil and produces an identical no-engagement symptom from a completely different cause. Candidates who read the two statements as competing explanations and pick the more likely one lose a mark they had already earned.
Question 6 · A8 Engine Performance: lean code diagnosis
A stored P0171, System Too Lean Bank 1, could be caused by all of the following EXCEPT:

ASE prints a warning line above EXCEPT questions because they invert the usual logic: three answers are correct causes and you are hunting the one that is not. An injector that leaks extra fuel adds fuel, which drives the mixture rich and would tend to set a P0172 rather than a lean code. The other three all reduce the fuel-to-air ratio the engine actually receives. Unmetered air entering after the MAF is measured means more air than the computer knows about. A contaminated MAF that under-reports produces too little commanded fuel for the real airflow. And low rail pressure means each injector delivers less fuel than its pulse width assumes.
Question 7 · G1 Maintenance and Light Repair: TPMS service
A vehicle with a direct tire pressure monitoring system has just had its tires rotated. Before returning the vehicle, the technician should:
- A. reset the oil life monitor, which also resets TPMS positions
- B. perform the manufacturer specified sensor relearn procedure
- C. do nothing, since direct systems relearn positions automatically on every vehicle
- D. disconnect the battery for ten minutes to clear stored sensor locations

A direct system has a pressure sensor inside each wheel, and the module stores which sensor identifier sits at which corner. Rotate the tires and those stored positions are now wrong, so a low left front will be reported at whatever corner that sensor used to occupy. The relearn procedure reassociates the identifiers with their new positions, and the method is manufacturer specific: some use a magnet or an activation tool, some use a sequence of ignition and pressure changes, and some genuinely do relearn on their own after a period of driving. Option C fails because it generalizes that last case to every vehicle. The oil life monitor and the battery have nothing to do with it.
Question 8 · A9 Light Vehicle Diesel: cold start diagnosis
A light duty diesel engine produces heavy white smoke at cold start that clears as the engine warms. Technician A says a failed glow plug or glow plug control circuit can cause this. Technician B says low compression in one or more cylinders can cause it. Who is right?

White smoke at cold start is atomized, unburned fuel leaving the cylinder, so anything that stops the charge reaching ignition temperature will produce it. Glow plugs exist specifically to raise combustion chamber temperature for cold starting, so a dead plug or a failed control circuit leaves fuel unburned until the engine warms itself, which matches the described symptom precisely. Low compression does the same thing by a different route, since compression is what generates the heat of ignition in a diesel. Both are genuine causes and both fit the clearing-when-warm pattern. Note how the symptom differs from its neighbors: black smoke is excess fuel that did burn, and blue smoke is engine oil.

ASE, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, lists 59 certification tests grouped into ten series, and a shop that says "get ASE certified" is telling you almost nothing about which one you need. The Automobile and Light Truck series runs A1 through A9 and covers engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical and electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, engine performance, and light vehicle diesel engines. Alongside it sits G1, Auto Maintenance and Light Repair, which is the entry point most technicians take first. Collision Repair and Refinish is B2 through B5, with B6 covering Damage Analysis and Estimating. C1 is the Automobile Service Consultant test, which is written for the person at the counter rather than the person under the hood. F1 covers Alternate Fuels. The Advanced Level series, L1 through L4, is Advanced Engine Performance Specialist, Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist, Light Duty Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Specialist, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Specialist. Then come the vocational series: H1 to H8 for Transit Bus, S1 to S7 for School Bus, T1 to T8 for Medium and Heavy Truck, P1 and P2 for Parts Specialist, and MIL1 to MIL8 for military tactical wheeled vehicles. Picking the wrong one is not a small error. The L-Series costs twice as much per test, requires a year more experience, and is built on the assumption that you already hold the underlying A-Series credential.
How many questions are on the ASE test, and how many actually count
This is the number almost every prep site gets wrong, and ASE states the rule plainly in its own study guides: to gather the performance statistics it needs for future test forms, each certification test contains 10 questions that are not counted for score. You are not told which ten, so you answer every question as if it counts. That rule turns the published totals into a simple piece of arithmetic. The A1 Engine Repair test is 55 questions with 45 scored, in 75 minutes. A2 Automatic Transmission and Transaxle is the same, 55 and 45 in 75 minutes. A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles and A4 Suspension and Steering are both 50 questions with 40 scored, in 60 minutes. A5 Brakes is 55 and 45 in 75 minutes. A6 Electrical and Electronic Systems is 60 and 50, and it gets the longest window on the automobile series at 90 minutes. A7 Heating and Air Conditioning, A8 Engine Performance and A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines are each 60 questions with 50 scored, in 75 minutes. The G1 test is 55 questions with 45 scored in 90 minutes. Work out the pace those numbers imply before you sit down. A6 gives you roughly 90 seconds a question, while A8 gives you about 75 seconds for the same 60 items. On a test built around diagnostic reasoning, fifteen seconds a question is the difference between finishing and guessing the last eight.
What is the passing score for the ASE test?
ASE does not publish one for its professional certification tests, and that is worth saying flatly because a great many prep sites quote a number anyway. We read ASE's own Frequently Asked Questions page, the official guide ASE Certification: Need to Know revised January 2026, the current dates and fees page, and a 2026 Official ASE Study Guide in full. None of them states a passing score, a required percentage, or a pass rate. What ASE does describe is how the tests are built: subject matter experts write the questions, every question is reviewed by the full committee, all questions are pretested to collect statistical data before they are ever used as scored items, and test managers assemble each form to published specifications for content and difficulty. That is the profile of a criterion-referenced exam with equated forms, where the raw number needed to pass shifts slightly between forms so that the standard stays constant. Two consequences follow. First, any site telling you "you need 70 percent to pass the ASE" invented that figure or borrowed it from someone who did. Second, the honest way to gauge readiness is not a percentage target on a practice test but consistent, reasoned accuracy across every content area in the specification, because you cannot know which form you will draw. There is one genuine exception worth knowing. The entry-level student tests written to the ASE Education Foundation instructional standard do publish a required-to-pass count, and it sits near half: 22 of 40 on Engine Repair, 21 of 40 on Manual Drive Train, 20 of 40 on Suspension and Steering. Those are the student tests, not the professional certification tests, and the two are routinely confused.
The Technician A and Technician B question is the one that decides your score
ASE tests use several multiple-choice formats, and the signature one is the two-technician item. It reads: Technician A says one thing, Technician B says another, who is right, with four options that are A only, B only, Both A and B, or Neither A nor B. ASE's own study guides give the method for answering it, and the method is better than anything an aftermarket course will sell you. Read Technician A's statement entirely on its own and decide whether it is true or false. Then set it aside completely and judge Technician B's statement on its own. Write down a T or an F for each. If exactly one is true, your answer is A only or B only. If both are true, the answer is Both. ASE also names the specific mistake candidates make: letting one technician's statement colour your reading of the other. The two technicians are not arguing with each other. They are two independent claims that happen to be printed near each other, and treating them as a debate is how a candidate who knows the material talks themselves out of a correct answer. The other formats matter less but still cost marks. Direct completion questions finish a sentence. Illustration questions show a worn part or a scope trace. And EXCEPT questions ask which of four items does not belong, with ASE printing a warning line above them because they invert the logic of everything else on the test. On an EXCEPT item, three plausible answers are the trap and the odd one out is the point.
How much ASE work experience do you need?
Passing the test does not make you ASE certified. ASE states it directly: all ASE certifications require documented, relevant work experience, and your credential is held until that experience is reviewed and approved. The requirement is not the flat two years repeated across the internet. ASE publishes three tiers. The Automobile Maintenance and Light Repair test, G1, requires 1 year. All the Advanced Level tests, L1 through L4, require 3 years. Every other test requires 2 years. Then comes the provision that changes the calculation for anyone coming out of a technical program: up to half of the experience requirement may be met by completing appropriate vocational training. A graduate of a two-year automotive program can therefore reach the two-year bar for an A-Series test with one year on the floor rather than two. You can take the test before your experience is documented, which is worth doing while the material is fresh, but the certificate will not issue until the work experience form is reviewed and approved through your myASE account. The practical order is: register and test when you are ready, submit the experience form in parallel, and expect the printed credential roughly three weeks after both are cleared.
What ASE certification costs in 2026, and the $220 cap most technicians miss
ASE's fee structure is simple and it has two features worth planning around. A registration fee of $34 is charged per order, not per test, so buying four tests in one order costs $34 in registration rather than $136. General certification tests are $62 each. The Advanced Level tests, L1 through L4, are $124 each, exactly double. Military tactical wheeled vehicle tests are $80 for MIL1 and $94 for MIL2 through MIL8. Recertification is priced identically to certification: $62 for general tests, $124 for L1 through L3. The feature that saves real money is the recertification cap. ASE caps the test fees on a recertification order so that the most anyone pays to recertify in a single order is $220, no matter how many recertification tests are in it. For a Master Automobile Technician holding A1 through A8, that is the difference between eight tests at $62 plus registration, which would be $530, and a capped $220. Recertifying everything in one order rather than spreading it across quarters is worth $310 to that technician, and nothing on the checkout page tells you so. The other option for A-Series holders is the ASE Renewal App, a subscription at $52 a year, which is covered in the next section. Registration runs in four windows through 2026: January 10 to March 31, April 10 to June 30, July 10 to September 30, and October 10 to December 31.
Recertification and the ASE Renewal App: the math nobody explains
ASE credentials are valid for five years. When they expire you either sit the recertification test, which is roughly half the length of the original, or, if your certification is in the Automobile series A1 through A9, you use the ASE Renewal App instead. The recertification tests are genuinely shorter. A1R is 23 scored questions in 30 minutes against A1's 45 scored in 75. A3R and A4R are 20 questions in 30 minutes. A6R and A8R are 25 questions in 45 minutes, and A5R, A7R and A9R are 25 or 23 questions in 30 minutes. G1R is 28 questions in 45 minutes. You must have passed the corresponding certification test once to be eligible for the shorter recertification version. The Renewal App works on a credit system that is simpler than it sounds and more demanding than it looks. It is an annual subscription, currently $52, open to anyone who has ever earned an A1 to A9 certification, including people whose credentials have already expired. It releases new questions every 30 days for each eligible certification you hold. A correct answer earns 1 credit. Once you accumulate 8 credits for a particular certification, ASE extends that credential's expiration date by 1 year. If the certification has already expired, ASE reactivates it for a minimum of 18 months. Get a question wrong and nothing bad happens: a second-chance or third-chance question on the same material appears 10 days later. So the real commitment is eight correct answers per certification per year, spread across monthly releases, which for a Master technician holding eight certifications means eight separate credit counts running in parallel. That is a genuine ongoing study habit rather than a box to tick, which is exactly why it works as a competency measure and exactly why technicians who treat it as a formality end up back in a test center.
The L-Series is a different exam, and the Composite Vehicle is why
If you are preparing for L1, L2 or L4, there is a document you must know before test day, and most practice tests never mention it. The L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist, L2 Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist and L4 ADAS Specialist tests each require you to consult a Composite Vehicle document to answer some of the questions. It is a fictional vehicle with its own published specifications, wiring, sensor values and diagnostic data, invented by ASE precisely so the test can ask genuine diagnostic questions without depending on any one manufacturer's system. During the test it appears as a searchable electronic pop-up. That sounds convenient and it is a trap for the unprepared, because reading a forty-page reference document cold, under time pressure, while working a diagnostic problem is close to impossible. ASE says plainly that it should be carefully reviewed prior to testing, and it is a free download from the ASE study guide page. The L3 Light Duty Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Specialist test uses a Certification Test Reference instead, which is included inside the Official L3 Study Guide rather than published separately. The L-Series also carries the heaviest prerequisites on the whole ASE ladder: 3 years of experience rather than 2, and $124 a test rather than $62. Treat it as the postgraduate tier it is.
Where and how you can take an ASE test
For a first certification in any test area, you go to a test center. ASE runs a national network of them and the tests are delivered on a computer. There is one exception and it is a useful one: the G1 Auto Maintenance and Light Repair test can be taken for initial certification through Prometric ProProctor, ASE's remote testing option, from home or from the shop if you can create a secure testing space. Recertification is different. Every recertification test in every series can be taken remotely through ProProctor. If you are going remote, register at least 4 days before your intended appointment, because you need time to download the test delivery application, run a system readiness check and set up the room. Appointments are available around the clock, which is worth reading carefully when you pick a slot. Two practical details catch people out at test centers. Latecomers may be turned away and forfeit their fees, and centers commonly use airport-level security including wanding, so arrive early. If you are taking more than one test in a session you may take a short break between them with the proctor's permission, but you stay inside the test center area and may be screened again. One more feature deserves more attention than it gets: the A1 to A9 tests and the G1 test offer a split-screen Spanish and English rendering of every question and answer option through a "Leer en espanol" button, with no special registration. Every ASE test, in every series, has a pop-up English to Spanish glossary available during testing.
The 90-day rule that quietly costs technicians the most money
Here is the ASE policy that burns more money than any other, and it is buried in the FAQ rather than flagged at checkout. Once you purchase a test, you have 90 days from the original date of purchase to schedule an appointment and take it. If testing is not completed within 90 days, the untaken test expires, all fees are forfeited, and you must register and pay the registration fee and the test fee again from scratch. Buying a stack of tests in one order to save on registration is smart, but only if you can actually sit all of them inside that window. The related traps are just as expensive. If you miss a scheduled appointment or arrive late, the test is scored as a No Show and all fees are forfeited, and you cannot even re-purchase that test until the official No Show result posts to your myASE account. No changes of any kind are allowed within three days of a scheduled appointment: you cannot reschedule and you cannot cancel for a refund inside that window. And if you fail, you must wait 30 full days before you can purchase and schedule the same test again. Score reports are emailed immediately after the appointment and post to myASE within about five days. Plan the calendar backwards from the 90-day expiry rather than forwards from the purchase date, and book every appointment the day you buy.
How to use an ASE practice test without fooling yourself
The most common way candidates waste practice questions is treating them as a score predictor. Since ASE publishes no passing percentage, a practice-test score has nothing to be measured against, which frees you to use questions the way they are actually useful: as a diagnostic. A question you got right by eliminating two options and guessing between the last two is not knowledge, and it will not survive a differently worded item on test day. Mark it as a miss when you review, and come back to it. Weight your practice to the published specification rather than evenly across topics. On the G1 test, Suspension and Steering is 24 percent of the exam and Brakes is 20 percent, which together are nearly half the test, while Automatic Transmission and Transaxle and HVAC are 7 percent each. Spending equal time on all seven areas means overspending on a seventh of the marks. Practice the two-technician format specifically, because it is a distinct skill from knowing the content. Take a stack of them and force yourself to write T or F for each statement separately before you look at the options. Candidates who do that stop losing the Both A and B items, which is where most of the format-related damage happens. And build the stamina the specific test demands: 60 questions in 75 minutes on A8 is a different physical exercise from 40 in 60 minutes on A4, and the last ten questions are where fatigue turns known material into wrong answers.

What ASE testing costs in 2026
The registration fee is charged per order rather than per test, and recertification orders are capped. Both facts change what a sensible order looks like.

It depends which test you sit. On the Automobile series, A3 and A4 are 50 questions, A1, A2 and A5 are 55, and A6 through A9 are 60. The G1 test is 55. Every ASE certification test includes 10 unscored research questions inside that total, so an A1 candidate answers 55 questions of which 45 count. You are not told which ten, so answer all of them.
ASE does not publish one for its professional certification tests. It is not in the FAQ, the fees page, the official guide ASE Certification: Need to Know revised January 2026, or the 2026 study guides. ASE describes an exam with pretested, statistically validated items assembled to a fixed content and difficulty specification, which means the raw number needed shifts slightly between forms. Any site quoting a fixed percentage invented it.
Between 60 and 90 minutes on the Automobile series. A3 and A4 are 60 minutes, A1, A2, A5, A7, A8 and A9 are 75 minutes, and A6 and G1 are 90 minutes. Recertification tests run 30 to 45 minutes. Note the pace differences: A6 gives about 90 seconds per question while A8 gives about 75 seconds for the same 60 items.
A general certification test is $62 and there is a $34 registration fee charged once per order rather than per test. Advanced Level tests, L1 through L4, are $124 each. Recertification is priced the same but a single recertification order is capped at $220 in test fees no matter how many tests it contains, which is a large saving for a Master technician recertifying several at once.
Three tiers, and it is not the flat two years usually quoted. The G1 Auto Maintenance and Light Repair test requires 1 year. All Advanced Level L tests require 3 years. Every other test requires 2 years. Up to half of the requirement may be met by completing appropriate vocational training, so a two-year program graduate can meet an A-Series requirement with one year on the floor.
You can sit the test, but you will not be certified until documented work experience is reviewed and approved through your myASE account. ASE holds the credential rather than the test result. Many technicians deliberately test while the material is fresh and submit the experience form in parallel. The certificate typically arrives about three weeks after both are cleared.
Five years. After that you either sit the recertification test for that area, which is roughly half the length of the original, or, for Automobile A1 to A9 certifications only, maintain the credential through the ASE Renewal App subscription instead.
It is a $52 annual subscription open to anyone who has ever held an A1 to A9 certification, including expired ones. It releases new questions every 30 days for each eligible certification. A correct answer earns 1 credit, and 8 credits for a given certification extends that credential by 1 year. If the certification has expired, ASE reactivates it for a minimum of 18 months. Answer wrong and a second or third chance question on the same material appears 10 days later.
You must wait 30 full days before you can purchase and schedule the same test again, and you pay the registration fee and the test fee in full each time. There is no retake discount.
Recertification tests in every series can be taken remotely through Prometric ProProctor. For initial certification, only the G1 Auto Maintenance and Light Repair test is eligible for remote testing; every other first-time certification must be taken at an ASE test center. Register at least 4 days ahead for a remote appointment so you have time for the system readiness check.
The signature ASE format. Two technicians each make a statement and you choose A only, B only, Both A and B, or Neither A nor B. ASE recommends judging each statement completely separately and writing down a true or false for each before you look at the options. Its own guidance names the common mistake: the two technicians are not arguing with one another, so do not let one statement colour how you read the other.
Pass the specified tests within a series, between 4 and 8 depending on the series, and meet the work experience requirement. For Automobile that means A1 through A8. Master status is available in the Automobile, Collision, Transit Bus, Medium and Heavy Truck, and School Bus series. As each credential expires you must recertify in that area to keep Master status.
A fictional vehicle with its own published specifications, wiring and sensor data that ASE created so the L1, L2 and L4 tests can ask real diagnostic questions without depending on one manufacturer. It appears as a searchable pop-up during the test, but reading it cold under time pressure is very difficult, so ASE advises reviewing it beforehand. It is a free download from the ASE study guide page. The L3 test uses a Certification Test Reference instead, included in the Official L3 Study Guide.
