Option B is the answer most people reach for under time pressure, because metaphase is when the chromosomes are visibly lined up at the equator and that is the image everyone pictures, but alignment is not separation. Option A is condensation and spindle formation, and option D is the reassembly of nuclear envelopes around the two decondensing sets after separation is already complete. A detail the OAT likes: the equivalent event in meiosis I is separation of homologous chromosomes rather than sister chromatids, which is why non-disjunction in meiosis I and meiosis II produce different gamete patterns.

Which structure is responsible for focusing light on the retina by changing shape?

Option C controls how much light enters by changing pupil diameter, which affects brightness and depth of field rather than focus. Option D is the gel maintaining the shape of the globe and plays no refractive role worth noting. Expect this distinction on the OAT specifically because optometry is the subject matter, so the exam tends to probe eye anatomy more precisely than a general biology test would.

What is the pH of a 0.001 M solution of HCl?

HCl is a strong acid and dissociates completely, so the hydrogen ion concentration equals the acid concentration at 0.001 M, which is 10 to the power of negative 3. pH is the negative logarithm of that, giving 3. Options A and B come from misreading the exponent, which is easy when the concentration is written in decimal form rather than scientific notation, so converting to 1 times 10 to the negative 3 first is worth the two seconds. Option D is pOH, and it is the trap that catches people who complete the calculation correctly and then answer the wrong question: pH plus pOH equals 14, so a pOH of 11 corresponds to the pH of 3 that was actually asked for. Always reread which quantity the stem wants before selecting.

The angular momentum quantum number l determines the subshell and therefore the shape: l equals 0 gives a spherical s orbital, 1 gives a dumbbell-shaped p orbital, 2 gives d and 3 gives f. Option A sets the energy level and the overall size of the orbital, which is why it is the most commonly chosen wrong answer, since larger and shape both sound geometric. Option C specifies orientation in space, so it distinguishes px from py from pz within a subshell but says nothing about shape. Option D describes electron spin and has nothing to do with the orbital itself. The relationship worth memorizing is that l runs from 0 to n minus 1, which is why the first energy level has only an s orbital and no p.

A tertiary alkyl halide is treated with a weak nucleophile in a polar protic solvent. Which mechanism predominates?

Three clues in the stem all point the same way. A tertiary substrate is too sterically hindered for backside attack and forms a stabilized carbocation; a weak nucleophile cannot drive a concerted displacement; and a polar protic solvent stabilizes the carbocation intermediate and the departing leaving group. That combination is the textbook SN1 profile. Option B is essentially impossible here, since SN2 requires an unhindered primary substrate and a strong nucleophile. Option C is the answer worth thinking hardest about, because E2 also favors tertiary substrates, but it needs a strong base rather than a weak nucleophile, and the stem specifies a weak one; note that E1 will genuinely compete with SN1 under exactly these conditions, which is why real SN1 reactions give elimination byproducts. Option D requires initiation conditions such as heat or light with a radical source, none of which appear.

An object is dropped from rest and falls freely for 3 seconds. Ignoring air resistance and taking g as 10 m/s squared, how far does it fall?

Use distance equals one half times acceleration times time squared, since the initial velocity is zero. That gives one half times 10 times 9, which is 45 meters. Option B is the classic error of multiplying the final velocity of 30 m/s by the 3 seconds, which computes distance as if the object had travelled at its final speed the whole way; because it accelerated uniformly from rest, the correct average speed is 15 m/s, half the final value, and 15 times 3 gives 45 again as a useful cross-check. Option D doubles that mistake by leaving out the one half factor entirely. Option A applies the formula but forgets to square the time. On the OAT, the physics section rewards knowing which kinematic equation to reach for more than heavy computation.

Two resistors of 4 ohms and 12 ohms are connected in parallel. What is the equivalent resistance?

For two resistors in parallel the equivalent resistance is the product over the sum, so 4 times 12 divided by 16 gives 3 ohms. Option C is the series answer and is the mistake that costs the most marks on circuit questions, because the two configurations are easy to conflate under time pressure. There is a sanity check that catches it instantly: equivalent parallel resistance is always smaller than the smallest individual resistor, because adding a parallel path gives current somewhere else to go. Since 3 is less than 4, the answer is at least plausible, while 8, 16 and 48 all fail that test on sight. Learning to apply that check takes a second and eliminates three of the four options here without any arithmetic at all.

If a solution is diluted from 500 mL of 0.4 M to a final volume of 2 L, what is the new concentration?

Dilution conserves moles, so use M1V1 equals M2V2, but convert the units first: 500 mL is 0.5 L. That gives 0.4 times 0.5 equals M2 times 2, so M2 is 0.2 divided by 2, which is 0.1 M. Option D is what you get by inverting the ratio and multiplying instead of dividing, and it fails an obvious check, since diluting a solution must lower the concentration rather than raise it. Option C comes from a fourfold rather than the correct fourfold-on-the-right calculation, and option A from an extra factor of two. The reliable habit is to reason about direction before arithmetic: the volume increased fourfold, from 0.5 L to 2 L, so the concentration must fall to a quarter of 0.4, which is 0.1.

The OAT is administered by the ADA Department of Testing Services and recognized by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry. It is computer-based, taken at Prometric test centers, and made up of 230 multiple-choice questions across four sections. The Survey of the Natural Sciences is 100 questions covering Biology (40), General Chemistry (30) and Organic Chemistry (30). Reading Comprehension is 50 questions across three science passages, and no outside knowledge is needed. Physics is 40 questions, and Quantitative Reasoning is 40 questions. The 200 to 400 OAT score scale
The OAT reports standard scores from 200 to 400 for each section, where 300 is the national mean, at roughly the 50th percentile, with a standard deviation of about 40. Two composite numbers matter most to schools. Your Academic Average is the mean of your six standard scores across Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Reading Comprehension and Quantitative Reasoning. Total Science is a single standard score built from your combined performance on Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physics. There is no passing score: each optometry school decides what it considers competitive, and admissions weigh your GPA, experience and the rest of your application alongside the OAT.

What counts as a good OAT score
On the 200 to 400 scale, the national average Academic Average is around 300, near the 50th percentile. A score of 320 or higher is a widely cited competitive target, roughly the average AA of admitted students across many programs, and 330 to 340 sits near the 90th percentile and is competitive for the most selective schools. Those percentile mappings come from the OAT normative data; the word competitive is interpretation, because no school publishes a hard cutoff. Matriculant averages have trended up toward the low 310s in recent years, so the practical target is at or above the median score of the schools you are actually applying to, then let the rest of your application carry weight.

DAT vs OAT: the OAT has Physics, the DAT has the Perceptual Ability Test
If you are choosing between optometry and dentistry, or just cross-reading prep, the single distinction to keep straight is this: the OAT has a Physics section and no Perceptual Ability Test, while the DAT has the Perceptual Ability Test and no Physics. Both exams come from the same ADA testing service and share Biology, General and Organic Chemistry, Reading Comprehension and a quantitative section, so most of your science prep transfers. Neither exam is universally harder. If you are strong in physics, the OAT may suit you; if you excel at spatial reasoning, the DAT's Perceptual Ability Test may feel easier. Note the OAT is scored 200 to 400 while the DAT moved to a 200 to 600 scale on March 1, 2025, so do not compare the raw numbers. The other structural difference is size: the OAT is 230 items over 5 hours 5 minutes, the DAT 280 items over 5 hours 15 minutes, because the Perceptual Ability Test alone is 90 items against the OAT Physics section's 40.
OAT Quantitative Reasoning: what the 40-item math section actually tests
OAT Quantitative Reasoning is 40 items in 45 minutes, and it is the section people most often under-prepare because they assume it is generic pre-med math. The 2026 Candidate Guide lists the content in two buckets. Mathematical Problems covers algebra (equations and expressions, inequalities, exponential notation, absolute value, ratios and proportions, and graphical analysis), then Data Analysis, Interpretation and Sufficiency, then Quantitative Comparison, then Probability and Statistics. Applied Mathematics, meaning word problems, is the second bucket and it is listed separately for a reason: translating a paragraph into an equation under time pressure is a different skill from solving the equation. Two details change how you should practice. First, a basic four-function calculator appears on screen for this section only, so no graphing, no scientific functions, and no memory beyond what the on-screen tool offers, which means messy arithmetic has to be planned around rather than powered through. Second, Quantitative Comparison items ask you to judge the relationship between two quantities rather than compute a single value, and candidates who drill only for a numeric answer lose time on them. At 45 minutes for 40 items you have about 67 seconds each, so the section rewards recognizing a question type fast far more than it rewards depth.

OAT sample test, OAT practice exam and OAT prep test: what is actually official
This is worth getting straight before you pay for anything, because the search results for OAT sample test and OAT prep test mix three different things together. The OAT Program publishes free practice test questions at oat.ada.org, and they are the only officially sourced OAT items in existence. The Candidate Guide is blunt about what they are for: they exist to show you the types of questions the exam asks, they are explicitly not intended to indicate how you will perform, and it cautions candidates not to limit their preparation to reviewing them. They are also copyrighted, which is why no legitimate site reproduces them. The second thing people find is a downloadable OAT sample test PDF, and no official full-length one exists; a PDF circulating under that name is either the ADA practice questions re-hosted or a third-party set. The third is Prometric Test Drive, which does include a sample test, but the Guide states it is a generic 15-minute test rather than an OAT-specific one, sold to familiarize you with check-in and the testing interface, not the content. One more line from the Guide is worth quoting when you are choosing a course: the OAT Program does not endorse any specific test preparation course and has no data on the content or efficacy of any of them. So an official OAT practice exam in the sense most people mean, a scored full-length predictor from the ADA, does not exist. Every full-length OAT practice test on the market is a third-party approximation, ours included, and the honest way to use one is for pacing and weak-area diagnosis rather than as a score prediction.

Cost, retakes and how to study
The 2026 OAT examination fee is $520, it is non-refundable and non-transferable, and it includes administration plus score reporting to the schools you select at the time of application. Three other fees exist and catch people out: $55 for each score report requested after application, $105 for an optional score audit within 30 days of your appointment, and $150 to extend your eligibility period by 45 days, which you may do once per application. On retakes, the 2026 Candidate Guide sets a 60-day wait between attempts with a maximum of four administrations in any 12-month period, and if you use all four you cannot sit a fifth until 12 months have passed from the first of those four. Three or more attempts require written permission to test again, with proof of a recent application to optometry school, and after a fifth attempt you may retest only once per 12-month period. None of that is subject to appeal. One detail worth planning around: if you have tested more than once, a history of all your testing attempts is reported to the schools, not just your best result. Most students study for about 8 to 12 weeks, built around content review followed by full-length practice and heavy question volume rather than passive re-reading. Because every attempt follows your application, thorough practice before the first sitting is the cheapest path.
