USMLE Step 3 CCS prep costs between $70 and $599, depending on whether you buy cases on their own or inside a question bank. Archer Review sells two CCS-only courses, CCS Strategies Only for $70 and Rapid CCS Prep for $88, each with 30 days of access. UWorld includes 90+ CCS cases in every Step 3 QBank, from $449 for 90 days, and renews CCS access on its own from $35 for 7 days. Amboss sells no CCS cases. All prices were read from the vendors on October 22, 2026.

The CCS portion is the part of Step 3 most residents leave until the last two weeks, usually because the multiple-choice questions feel more urgent. Then the question becomes what to buy. You already paid the $955 Step 3 fee, and you may already own a question bank. The CCS market is small, the prices are scattered across vendor pages, and the cheapest option depends entirely on what you bought before. Here is every CCS option we could price, what each one actually gives you, and which one to buy for your situation.

Bar chart of USMLE Step 3 prep prices: UWorld 360 days in the iOS app $859, UWorld QBank Plus 360 days $698, UWorld QBank 360 days $599, UWorld QBank 90 days $449, Amboss with 12-month Qbank $448, Aspirants.ai Starter yearly $288, Archer Rapid CCS Prep 30 days $88

Is it worth paying for CCS cases at all

Yes, for most residents, because the skill being tested is the software as much as the medicine. On Day 2 of Step 3 you work through 13 Computer-based Case Simulations, where you order tests, write treatments, move the clock and change the patient's location, and the case keeps running whether you act or not. Residents who manage patients well every day still lose points by forgetting to counsel, failing to advance time, or ordering a consult instead of acting. The official practice cases teach you the interface. A paid product adds two things the official set does not have: many more cases, and feedback that tells you which orders scored and which were missed.

The question is not whether to practice cases but how many you need. Somebody who did well on Step 2 CK and has a strong medicine base usually gets what they need from the official cases plus a few dozen practice cases. Somebody who failed CCS sections in practice, or whose specialty rarely touches acute medicine, needs volume.

Archer CCS vs UWorld CCS

The two products teach different things. Archer's Rapid CCS Prep is a video course: Dr. Red works through cases on software built to look like the exam and explains the orders, the timing and the strategy. It is passive, and that is the point. You learn the pattern for chest pain, sepsis or diabetic ketoacidosis, then apply it. Archer's own page describes the content as about 35 hours in one paragraph and lists 40+ hours of demonstration on the product card, so expect somewhere in that range. CCS Strategies Only at $70 is just the strategy lecture, under three hours, aimed at someone with very little time.

UWorld's CCS cases are interactive. You run each case yourself in an exam-like interface and get scored feedback afterward. That is closer to test day, and it is included with the question bank most residents buy anyway. If you already own UWorld Step 3, you already own its 90+ cases and do not need to pay for CCS again unless your subscription runs out.

Which CCS prep to buy for your situation

You own UWorld Step 3. Do not buy anything else for CCS. Work through UWorld's cases, run the official practice cases once to see the real interface, and spend the money you saved on time off before the exam. If your subscription is about to expire and you still have cases left, UWorld's CCS-only renewal is $35 for 7 days, $55 for 15 or $75 for 30, which is much cheaper than renewing the whole bank at $149 for 30 days.

You own Amboss or another bank without CCS. This is where Archer's $88 Rapid CCS Prep earns its place. Amboss's own Step 3 FAQ tells residents to practice CCS with an external source, and it does not sell cases. A year of Amboss with unlimited Qbank is $448; adding Archer brings the total to about $536. Compare that with UWorld's 180-day plan at $499 for the UWorld Step 3 QBank with cases included before you commit, because if you have not bought a bank yet, UWorld alone is cheaper.

You have not bought anything and the exam is under three months away. The 90-day UWorld plan at $449 covers questions, cases and both self-assessments. It is the simplest single purchase. Do not also buy the standalone UWorld self-assessments; every Step 3 plan already includes both forms, which is a different rule from Step 1 and Step 2 CK, as we explain on the UWorld self-assessment price page.

You have a week left and have not touched CCS. Buy Archer's $70 strategy video or the $88 course, watch the strategy section first, and run the official practice cases twice. Strategy gets you most of the way in a short time.

What CCS rewards, and how to study it cheaply

CCS scoring follows standard, guideline-based management: the right first orders, done in the right location, at the right time, with the counseling and follow-up a real patient would get. Residents who are unsure why a guideline recommends one step over another can look up the trial evidence behind a management decision in plain English, which helps the order sets stick better than memorizing a list. The rest is repetition in the software. Most CCS guides recommend writing a short template for each common presentation (chest pain, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, altered mental status, pregnancy complaints, pediatric fever) and rehearsing it until the orders come out without thinking.

The multiple-choice half still decides most of your score, and that is where a fixed bank runs out. Once you have done UWorld's 2,100+ questions or Amboss's 2,250+, the topics you keep getting wrong are the ones you have no fresh questions for. Aspirants.ai writes new Step 3 style vignettes on any topic you pick and explains every answer choice, so you can drill the exact management questions you keep missing, from $24 a month billed yearly. For a full price comparison of the banks themselves, see what Amboss costs with the Qbank and how much UWorld costs for each exam.

Total cost of Step 3, including CCS

The FSMB lists the Step 3 fee at $955 for eligibility periods in both 2026 and 2027, and it is non-refundable. Add UWorld's 90-day or 180-day QBank and the total is $1,404 to $1,454 with CCS included. The Amboss plus Archer route lands at about $1,491 for a year of access. If you buy UWorld in the iOS app instead of on the website, the same plans cost $649, $719 and $859, which adds $200 to $260 to the bill and UWorld says it cannot refund in-app purchases. Some residency programs reimburse Step 3 or education costs, so check your program's policy before paying.
