Amboss price: Amboss subscription cost from $149 a year to $1,199 for Student Life, and Amboss vs UWorld

Amboss earns its place on most students' resource list for one reason: every question links straight into a library article, so a wrong answer turns into a reading session on the exact concept you missed. The Library holds well over a thousand articles, the Qbank is priced once rather than per exam, and the Anki add-on and AI Mode are included in every membership rather than sold as extras. Its explanations are longer than most and it is widely regarded as strong on the parts of Step 2 CK that other banks treat lightly, such as ethics, patient safety, quality improvement and biostatistics. It also covers shelf exams, which UWorld sells separately or not at all. Credit where it is due: for a student who wants one subscription to carry through the preclinical years, the clerkship shelves and Step 2 CK, Amboss is the most complete single product on the market.

Amboss sells three things that look like one. The membership is the base: $19.99 a month or $149 a year for students, $29.99 a month or $259 a year for clinicians. It unlocks the Library, AI Mode and the Anki add-on, but only 50 Qbank questions a month, and once you hit that limit you cannot even review questions you already answered. The Qbank add-on is what you are really buying for board prep. On the Step pages it is sold bundled with a yearly membership at $298 for one month of unlimited questions, $378 for six months and $448 for twelve. The third product is Student Life, a one-time $1,199 payment that covers the membership, unlimited Qbank and the Self-Assessments through the end of PGY-1. The cheapest Amboss plan is not a cheap way to do questions. A $19.99 month gives you 50 Qbank questions, which is about one timed block of 40 plus ten more. A dedicated Step 1 student does 80 to 120 questions a day. So the membership alone is a library subscription, and anyone buying Amboss for board prep is really choosing between the three yearly bundles or Student Life. The math on those is steep in your favor. The one-month bundle is $298 and includes the full year of Library access, so the unlimited month itself costs $149 on top of the $149 yearly membership. Going from one month of Qbank to twelve costs another $150, or $12.50 for each extra month. Unless your exam is already booked inside four weeks, buy twelve months. You get the shelves as well, and a failed or postponed exam does not strand you with an expired bank.

Amboss advertises Student Life at $0.66 a day. The page does not show the arithmetic, but $1,199 divided by $0.66 is roughly 1,800 days, about five years, which is four years of medical school plus PGY-1. That rate only holds if you buy in first year and keep it the whole way. There is a catch in the fine print. The Student Life page says access starts at four years by default, while Amboss support says only the first two years are granted at purchase and the rest is set once you send proof of your graduation year. And Student Life bought after August 8, 2024 renews automatically as a yearly resident membership after PGY-1, so put a reminder in your calendar. The break-even is simple: the $448 yearly bundle bought three times is $1,344, so Student Life pays off if you would otherwise renew the full bundle for three years or more. A student buying in third year for Step 2 CK alone will not get there.

On cost per question for Step 1 alone they are almost identical: $448 across 2,700+ Amboss Step 1 questions is about 17 cents each, and $579 across 3,600+ UWorld Step 1 questions is about 16 cents. UWorld wins on bank size for a single step and on its reputation as the closest match to the real exam.
